Pear Crisp

If you ever need something that doesn’t take much work and tastes fresh and delicious, here’s your go-to dessert! Not to mention pears are ripe and fresh at this time of year (the red ones are the best.) During the Spring and Summer you could use apples, peaches, or nectarines for this same recipe too, so it’s flexible too – kinda like a good little black dress?

5 to 6 cups sliced pears

1 cup sifted flour

1/2 to 1 cup sugar

1 tsp baking powder

3/4 tsp salt

1 unbeaten egg

1/3 cup melted, cooled shortening

1/2 tsp cinnamon


  • Grease a 6″ x 10″ baking dish and preheat the oven to 350F.
  • Put the cut pears into the dish.
  • Mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and unbeaten egg with a fork until crumbly.
  • Sprinkle over the pears.
  • Pour the cooled shortening over the whole mixture, then sprinkle with the cinnamon.

  • Bake for about 40 minutes until the crumbly top has crisped up a bit.
  • Enjoy plain or with ice cream!
